Upper Market, Fakenham

After a devastating fire to a group of listed buildings in the centre of Fakenham, the construction of a new replacement structure was to comprise of two separate properties. A large retail unit to replace the original Aldiss store and an adjacent property consisting of ground floor retail space with 4 flats above.

The need for the new building to blend in with the historic streetscape, we designed a steel framed structure supported on a piled foundation. The ground conditions together with brick basements and adjacent shallow foundations presented some challenges. Adjacent buildings also relied heavily on the original structure for structural integrity, this required extensive temporary support throughout the course of the work.

To achieve the modern retail space together with their traditional appearance, cellular beams composite with profiled metal deck floors were utilised to provide services space within the restricted floor depths.

We also undertook, drainage design and the party wall surveyor role for the site.
