LAND CONTAMINATION - JPC ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES LTD

The Government is committed to bringing more brownfield land back into sustainable use. Concentrating development on brownfield sites can help to make the best use of existing services such as transport and waste management. It can encourage more sustainable lifestyles by providing an opportunity to recycle land, clean up contaminated sites and assist environmental, social and economic regeneration. It also reduces pressure to build on greenfield land and helps protect the countryside.

Land contamination poses a number of potential 'risks' to the UK Developer. It is therefore essential to identify and quantify these risks at the earliest stage. A comprehensive and detailed site assessment provides the Client with a basis on which to forecast costs.

The investigation of contaminated land can be broken down into four phases. The phase 1 investigates the site and surrounding area in terms of potential sources and contamination, possible pathways and likely receptors. The assessment then evaluates the potential risk associated with the identified polutant linkages. The phase 2 investigation is an intrusive investigation which concentrates on identifying and quantifying potential contaminants within the site. The phase 3 is the compilation of a remediation method statement detailing how the site will be cleaned up so that it is suitable for the proposed development type. The phase 4 report pulls together all the previous investigations and provides an audit trail for the remediation works concluding in a certificate of site condition.
