Bradfield Woods, Bury St Edmunds

We have been appointed by Suffolk Wildlife Trust (SWT) to design the structure of a new visitor centre at Bradfield Woods, near Bury St Edmunds. These historic woods date to early 12th Century and the new visitor centre will replace an existing small visitor building on the site. The proposed building, designed by Modece architects, is almost entirely timber, generally green oak - with the exception of a small area of clay lump forming the chimneybreast. The design has been an iterative process with the required structural timber sizes being passed to SWT who have subsequently checked the quantity of oak trees necessary for felling to meet the design. Fortunately, the Trust has a large amount of oak trees, planted post WW2 that require thinning and will therefore be used in the piling, floor deck and framing elements of the single storey building. The trees will be felled in October 2010 for construction early in the New Year.
